“Au Naturel” Juried Show June 30 through July 26 at Salt & Fat

Hello everyone –

I am pleased to announce that my artwork is among those selected for the “Au Naturel” Juried Show, June 30 through July 26 at Salt & Fat. If you are in the Sunnyside Queens area during the month of July, drop on by. The restaurant is just across the street from the #7 Subway line, at the 40th street stop. Super convenient, and only 5 minutes outside Manhattan.

Thank you to Sunnyside Artists for arranging the exhibit, and to all the artists who submitted work.

The weather was great, there was a large turnout, and I was able to sell quite a few prints and smaller pieces. Thanks again to Sunnyside Artists for organizing such a fun event! We will definitely be back for the next one…

Over 20 New Paintings Added

Hello everyone –

I have spent the past year focusing increasingly on my painting creations, experimenting with two new painting series. Water and Raw Sienna.

Water is vital for life. Water is in continuous motion. Water cycles through evaporation, condensation, precipitation. Water heals. Water… erodes. Water is an experimental series of paintings. The human narrative is still there, but the subjects are now interconnected with this additional elemental force. As paint is applied to the canvas, the water will deteriorate that same paint and wash it away. Colors bleed, the subjects are obscured, and the water brings an extension of emotion. As with all my works, I ask the viewer to bring their own interpretation to each painting, and create a new and unique story each time the work is viewed.
The Raw Sienna series has no determined boundary. What happened outside of the canvas is equally as important as what is depicted within. The viewer is engaged to bring their own thoughts on environment and setting and to the painting. Each viewer will supply their own narrative to the works, whether viewing an individual painting or the implied interaction between works on display.

There are also a few new Big Heads and Miscellaneous paintings added in as well. In total, 24 new paintings have now been added to the site, and can be viewed in the Paintings galleries.

New Painting: Molly II

Hello, everyone –

This latest painting was both a commissioned piece as well as being a bit of an experiment for me. I had worked with Molly previously for one of my Big Heads portrait paintings. That painting was a personal success for me, and a project I very much enjoyed. Molly’s parents were fond of the painting as well, and were interested in purchasing it, provided I might make some alterations to the image (most notably painting out the Batman comic). I was happy with the painting the way it was, but offered a compromise: I would paint Molly a second time, this time crafting the painting more towards their sensibilities.

Molly and I had a photoshoot during the summer of 2012 and I had every intention of diving into the painting. Unfortunately, my personal life took a bit of a detour and I ended up taking a hiatus of close to a year from painting. By the time I got back into the mindset to paint, I was curious how I might handle the piece. I probably overthought it too much, to be honest. The photoshoot had been extremely fun, and the reference photos were all very inspiring to look at again.

In the end, I wanted to take a quieter, softer, sweeter approach with this painting. I wanted something Molly’s parents would thoroughly enjoy and be proud of. Though this piece doesn’t have my usual quirkiness to it, I feel there’s still so much of “me” included here and there. And ultimately I am proud that her parents have this piece on display in their home.

After a review of nearly 600 submissions from talented alumni around the world, I am delighted to announce that my painting, Felipe Calderón, Former President of Mexico, has been chosen for inclusion in the 2013 Parsons Alumni Exhibition. This salon-style exhibition is open to the public October 14-19 in the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries, Sheila C. Johnson Design Center.
